πWe are deeply saddened to announce that Australian πCricketer Andrew Symonds died in a car accident on May 14, 2022.
Andrew Symonds was an Australian worldwide cricket player who was the major
member of two World Cup-winning squads.
- While playing for Gloucestershire versus Glamorgan as a 20-year-old, Symonds held the world records for the most sixes hit in a first-class innings (16) and in a first-class match (20). His first-innings total of 254 not out was impressive.
- The decline of his cricket career in 2002 led Symonds to seriously consider making the jump to rugby league, where he had been a lifelong fan since childhood. His Wynnum Manly Seagulls side faced up against an all-star team that included Marcus Bai and Steve Renouf on June 21, 2009, when he played for the Wynnum Manly Seagulls. The Brisbane Broncos used him as a training partner as well.
- Patiala House, a 2011 Bollywood film featuring Symonds, featured a cameo appearance from the actor. The Indian reality show Bigg Boss included Symonds as a participant in 2011. Despite being removed from Bigg Boss 5, Pooja Mishra was brought back to the show to work as a translator for Symonds.
- Between the 2016–17 and 2018–19 seasons, Symonds served as a guest commentator for Big Bash matches.
Legal Issue
- During the home Test series against India, Andrew Symonds was involved in a very unpleasant altercation. Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh labeled him a “monkey” in the 2008 Sydney Test. Symonds found the comments racially repulsive, and the two engaged in a full-fledged debate.
- Prior to a tri-series match against Bangladesh in Cardiff, Andrew Symonds was dropped from the Australian team. Due to the fact that he had been drinking excessively the night before and had broken the team’s code of conduct, he was suspended for two games and fined as well.
- At one point, Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds were good friends. Clarke was a huge supporter of Andrew Symonds during the ‘Monkeygate’ incident, but their relationship soured after Clarke became vice-captain and the infamous moment from the 2008 Bangladesh ODI series when Symonds was sent home. He decided to go fishing instead of attending the team meeting, which was the most radical decision of his career because his image didn’t mesh with the rest of the group.
